Once you get past “Donde esta el bano?”, the situation can still be confusing. In Costa Rica, you do not put paper in the toilet because their water system is not up to American standards. But I wasn’t sure if that included the luxury hotel I was privileged to be staying in during my volunteer trip. Who do you ask? I believe I opted for in the toilet thinking they might have a better sewage disposal system than the average business or house.
In the Galapagos, I paid the young man reading a book in the hallway 10 cents for the privilege. He handed me a paper towel.
